TidalKite test plan at Ameland

by SeaQurrent

Deliverable D.1.1.6

As part of the Interreg North-West Europe SHINES project, SeaQurrent has developed a comprehensive test plan for the offshore demonstration of its TidalKite technology at the Ameland test site. The deliverable provides the framework for systematically validating the technology under real marine conditions.

Testing innovative marine renewable energy technologies requires a structured and phased approach to ensure safe, reliable and efficient operation. The test plan describes a step-by-step validation strategy that builds confidence in the technology by progressing from controlled testing environments to offshore operation in the Wadden Sea. This approach helps reduce technical and operational risks while ensuring that each development stage is thoroughly evaluated before advancing to the next.

The testing programme builds on earlier Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and integrated underwater validation in a controlled freshwater environment before continuing to offshore sea trials at the Ameland test site. Together, these phases provide the foundation for validating system functionality, operational procedures and overall system performance in representative tidal conditions.

The offshore test plan covers a broad range of validation activities, including system installation and commissioning, verification of control and safety systems, operational testing throughout complete tidal cycles, performance assessment, environmental monitoring, long-term reliability evaluation and maintenance planning. By combining technical validation with environmental and operational assessments, the programme aims to generate the knowledge required for the responsible development of tidal energy technologies.

An important aspect of the test plan is its focus on learning. The planned activities are designed not only to evaluate the performance of the TidalKite system, but also to improve operational procedures, strengthen system reliability and gather experience that can support future deployments. Environmental monitoring and stakeholder considerations are integrated throughout the programme, reflecting the importance of developing innovative marine renewable energy technologies in harmony with the surrounding ecosystem.

By establishing a structured offshore validation programme, the SHINES project contributes to reducing technical and operational barriers for hydrokinetic energy technologies. The knowledge generated through the planned demonstration campaign will support the future deployment of predictable, locally generated tidal energy for islands and coastal communities across North-West Europe.
