Tidal Energy Safety Through Comprehensive HAZID Assessment
by SeaQurrent
Deliverable D.1.2.6
As part of the Interreg North-West Europe SHINES project, SeaQurrent has completed a comprehensive Hazard Identification (HAZID) assessment for its TidalKite technology. The study represents an important milestone in preparing the system for safe deployment and testing in real marine environments.
HAZID studies are a recognised engineering method used to identify potential risks and evaluate mitigation measures before operational activities begin. By systematically reviewing the TidalKite system, supporting infrastructure and operational procedures, the project team worked to ensure that safety considerations are integrated throughout the development process.
The assessment brought together expertise from multiple disciplines to examine a broad range of operational scenarios. These included mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, control-system and marine operational aspects of the technology. For each identified hazard, potential consequences, likelihoods and mitigation measures were assessed to support safe and reliable operation.
The HAZID process also contributed to strengthening operational procedures and validating existing design choices. By identifying areas requiring additional safeguards, monitoring or procedural controls, the assessment supports continuous improvement of the TidalKite system and helps reduce technical and operational risks during future testing activities.
Safety and environmental responsibility are key elements in the successful deployment of marine renewable energy technologies. The completion of the HAZID assessment demonstrates SeaQurrent's commitment to the safe and responsible development of tidal energy, helping to protect both people and the marine environment while supporting future demonstration activities within the SHINES project.
Through initiatives such as this, SHINES is helping accelerate the development of hydrokinetic energy solutions that can contribute to a more resilient and sustainable energy system across North-West Europe.
