Ameland Test Site Report
by SeaQurrent
Deliverable D.1.1.2
As part of the Interreg North-West Europe SHINES project, SeaQurrent has delivered a Ameland Test Site report. The site plays an important role in advancing the demonstration, validation and future deployment of TidalKite technologies across North-West Europe.
Unlike conventional tidal turbines, TidalKite is designed to operate efficiently across a wide range of tidal flow conditions, including both moderate and high current velocities, enabling tidal energy generation in a broader range of locations.
Marine renewable energy technologies require more than innovative technology alone. Their successful deployment relies on a combination of technical maturity, environmental responsibility, stakeholder support, regulatory approval and access to suitable infrastructure. Located near one of the Dutch Wadden Islands, the Ameland Test Site offers predictable tidal currents, access to grid infrastructure and a supportive regional ecosystem for renewable energy innovation. By providing a real-world environment for testing and demonstration, the site enables to gain practical experience that supports the future of tidal energy technologies.
Within SHINES, the demonstration of the SeaQurrent TidalKite system happens at the Ameland Test, here environmental and operational experience can be gained under real marine conditions. The site allows researchers and developers to better understand the opportunities and challenges associated with deploying tidal energy systems in sensitive coastal environments.
Environmental responsibility is a central aspect. The Wadden Sea is recognised internationally for its ecological value, and extensive studies and stakeholder engagement activities have been carried out to support responsible testing and operation. Knowledge gained through these activities contributes to a growing understanding of how innovative marine renewable energy technologies can coexist with valuable natural ecosystems.
The work at Ameland contributes directly to the wider objectives of SHINES: accelerating the deployment of hydrokinetic energy technologies, strengthening regional energy sovereignty, and supporting the transition towards a more sustainable European energy system.
By combining environmental stewardship, stakeholder collaboration and infrastructure readiness, the TidalKite demonstration at the Ameland Test Site represents an important step towards unlocking the potential of tidal energy for islands and coastal communities across North-West Europe.
